No Time to Relax? Here's an Excuse to Find Time

Written by Colton Rooney

August 15th was "Nation Relaxation Day"... it's a day that encourages us to slow down and unwind. It’s a day to focus on taking care of ourselves and take a moment to relax. So, what should YOU do to relax and how does it help you? Whether it's a long day at work, a stressful day at school, lots of appointments during the day, or the pressure of a major sports game, we all have hectic schedules that can sometimes be stressful. Many people continue to go about their busy lives without the proper breaks of relaxation leading to exhaustion and possibly elevated anxiety.

Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation Techniques are characterized by their ability to lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, and slow breathing. These techniques all share the same outcome of positively transforming an individual’s thoughts through complete relaxation of the body.

Some of these techniques include:

  • Breathing Exercises - Individuals take long deep breaths and release their negative thoughts in favor of focusing on their pattern of breathing.

  • Guided Imagery - A usage of visualized scenes or objects of peace to bring comfort and relaxation. This can be accompanied with relaxing music or calming commentary.

  • Progressive Relaxation - This is a simple exercise that can be done by creating tension in the muscles before slowly releasing the tension, mimicking the release of stress.

  • Mindfulness Meditation - Individuals close their eyes, breathe deeply, and focus on their environment to appreciate their surroundings and feel more aware.

  • Yoga - A combination of poses, stretching, and deep breathing to relieve pent-up muscle tension and stress.

Benefits of Relaxation

Relaxation features many mental and physical benefits. A few of these include:

  • Lowered Blood Pressure

  • Slowed Breathing Rate

  • Higher Sleep Quality

  • Increasing Blood Flow to Muscles

  • Mitigating Pent-Up Anger

  • A Boost in Mood

  • Maintained Blood Sugar Levels

  • Reduced Muscle Tension

But most of all, it helps you feel refreshed, energized, and able to tackle the craziness of everyday life.

As "National Relaxation Day" rolls around, it's important to prioritize your mental health and ensure some stress relief from your hectic life. Consider trying a new breathing exercise or maybe practice some yoga poses!
